As the world’s attention turns to France, the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will kick off tonight during an official opening ceremony held in the heart of the city along the River Seine.

During 19 days of competition (with handball, football and rugby games having already started from 24 July), 10,500 athletes contest in 32 sports, which include the four additional sports of breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing. The sports programme features 329 events with 754 ticketed sessions (for competitions and ceremonies) which take place across 35 competition venues. These are the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity, with the participating athletes coming from over 200 National Olympic Committees and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team.

ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said on the day of the Opening Ceremony:

The organisers of Paris 2024 have worked hard throughout the last years to make these Olympic Games younger, more inclusive, more urban and more sustainable than ever before. They have done so against the backdrop of several global challenges. Together with its member federations, ASOIF has committed to ensure the successful delivery of the Olympic competitions. It’s exciting to see this all coming together now.

During the Games, and as international governing bodies of their respective sports, ASOIF’s member federations are responsible for the control and direction of their sports.  As part of this they have responsibility for overseeing all technical aspects, including the “field of play” and the application of the rules. They also provide the Technical Officials (e.g. judges) needed for running the competitions.

ASOIF has a small team on-site to support the smooth running of the sports operations, in close collaboration with the IOC, the Paris 2024 organisers and the International Federations.

The Olympic Games Paris 2024 will come to a close on 11 August and will be followed by the Paralympic Games to be held from 28 August to 8 September.
