Preview of ASOIF’s 2024 General Assembly

It’s less than two weeks to go until the 48th General Assembly of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), which will take place on 9 April in Birmingham, UK, during the SportAccord World Sport & Business Summit and promises a rich agenda.

Ingmar De Vos, ASOIF Council member, International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and President of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), will stand for election as the next ASOIF President, with the third term of incumbent President Francesco Ricci Bitti coming to an end on 31 December 2024. The President is elected by secret ballot for a term of four years in the year of the Summer Olympic Games and takes up the position on 1 January of the following year.

In Birmingham, the ASOIF General Assembly will also receive reports from the Olympic Games Organising Committees for Paris 2024 and LA28. With less than a few months to go to Paris 2024 and in view of the International Federations' (IFs’) instrumental role in the delivery of the Olympic programme, a significant focus will be on the latest preparations for this summer’s Games.

In addition, the General Assembly will discuss the implications of the expanded LA28 sports programme, such as on areas like IF revenue share, athlete quotas, Olympic qualification systems and Games optimisation.

Other in-person reports will be delivered from the IOC, the Dakar 2026 Organising Committee for the Youth Olympic Games, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Testing Agency (ITA).

The ASOIF membership will also vote on certain Statute amendments, which, amongst others, aim to clarify the start and expiry date for Associate Membership given the increasingly dynamic Olympic Programme. Subsequently, the International Cricket Council (ICC), International Federation of American Football (IFAF), World Lacrosse and World Squash will seek the General Assembly’s approval to join ASOIF as Associate Members.

Finally, an update will be provided on the ongoing Fifth Review of IF Governance. All participating federations submitted their self-assessment questionnaire and the final report is due to be published in early summer.

The agenda of the General Assembly is available here and the meeting will be fully livestreamed on YouTube.
