The FIG Yearbook 2022 is out
The magazine has been published online providing a review of Gymnastics’ governing body’s main events and activities over the last calendar year.
The new FIG Yearbook has been published online this week, providing the world’s Gymnastics community with a summary of the FIG’s actions and achievements in 2022.
The Yearbook reviews activities in the areas of sport, institutional affairs, media and marketing and the FIG President, Morinari Watanabe, picks his highlights of the year in a Foreword which touches on the challenges faced too.
The FIG President writes: “Although 2022 was in many ways a much better year for Gymnastics and sport in general, with a full calendar of FIG events from sports to education and in-person administrative meetings, the year was not without its challenges. And these challenges once again had a direct impact on international sport and forced us to adapt to a rapidly changing political landscape.
“In spite of this, the FIG was able to hold six successful World Championships throughout the year, including the world’s first-ever Parkour World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, as well as the Congress in Istanbul, Türkiye.”
If the above-mentioned Parkour World Championships represented a landmark event for the youngest discipline, the year in Gymnastics also featured the claiming of the first berths for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Artistic Gymnastics in Liverpool, Great Britain, and Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. There were also the World Championships in Acrobatic Gymnastics and Aerobic Gymnastics – held respectively in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Guimaraes, Portugal – as well as The World Games in Birmingham, United States.
Away from the field of play, 2022 witnessed the launch of the FIG’s new commissions based around the pillars of governance, digital transformation, sustainable development goals (SDGs), and technical matters.
The FIG’s continued improved performance as regards transparency and integrity is highlighted in an Institutional section which underlines also the value of the inaugural Safeguarding Symposium, held jointly with British Gymnastics during the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
In the field of Education and Development, the Yearbook looks at how the FIG implemented its e-Learning platform and used it for the delivery of Foundations of Gymnastics and Level 1 Academy courses.
The Media and Marketing section explains the progress of the FIG’s Market Research project, undertaken to review and analyse TV coverage and social-media reach. It provides details of the FIG’s improved level of engagement with digital audiences.
The Yearbook ends with an Outlook section which includes reflections from the FIG’s various Technical Committee presidents on the future of the sport – and how they believe it can be made more attractive by promoting essential technical components while also embracing new ways to engage audiences using technology.
