World Triathlon's Secretary General Arimany elected Vice President of the ICAS

World Triathlon is proud to announce that its Secretary General, Antonio Fernández Arimany, has been elected Vice President of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), in elections held today in the Olympic capital, Lausanne. Mr. Arimany, a member of the Tribunal since 2018, becomes the first Spaniard to reach a position of such responsibility in the regulatory framework of international sport. Among the new members of the Tribunal elected at the Lausanne Assembly is also the double Olympic medalist in triathlon Nicola Spirig (Switzerland).

“It is an honor for me personally, and for the entire International Federation, to have our Secretary General serving as Vice President of the most important legal institution within sports governing bodies, which means that our voices will be heard and that we will continue to work towards best practices and learn from the best in the world. At World Triathlon we are extremely proud that members of our Executive Board, and especially Mr. Arimany, can cooperate in such prestigious international institutions, further proof that our policies are correct, and that our members are highly respected internationally,” said Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC Member.

“I want to extend our most sincere congratulations to our Secretary General for his excellent work on all legal issues in recent years, both in our Federation and when he has had to practice at ICAS, a brilliant performance that has earned him his election now for this position”, she added.

I promise, as I have always done, to carry out my duties with all my effort and loyalty, to ensure the defense of the rights of athletes and sports institutions”, said Mr. Arimany.

Mr. Arimany was elected in 2018 as a member of ICAS, the CAS governing body in charge of its administration and finances. It is made up of twenty international judges and lawyers active in judicial, international arbitration and sports administration. Arimany is also President of the Legal Advisory Group of the International Association of Summer Olympic Federations (ASOIF) and is a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee. He also has extensive experience in the Olympic Movement, where he has worked for the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, as well as in various Olympic bid processes.

In December 2016, Mr. Arimany was elected Secretary General of World Triathlon, a position he still holds today. He was previously General Director of this institution since 2014 and, between 2010 and 2014 he had the functions of Legal Administrative Director and Financial.

The CAS is an independent international legal institution based in Lausanne (Switzerland), and is responsible for resolving legal disputes in the sports field through arbitration and mediation. The jurisdiction of the CAS is recognized by all Olympic sports federations, the International Olympic Committee and many non-Olympic federations. The CAS registers around 600 cases per year.

At the CAS meeting held in Lausanne to vote on the composition of the Court for the next four years, the following appointments have been approved:
- President: Mr John Coates AC, from Australia.
- Vice Presidents: Michael Lenard (USA), Elisabeth Steiner (Austria) and Antonio F. Arimany (Spain)
- President of the Appeals area: Corinne Schmidhauser (Switzerland)
- Vice President of the Appeals Area: Elisabeth Steiner (Austria)
- President of the Ordinary Area: Carole Malinvaud (France)
- Vice President of the Ordinary Area: Giulio Napolitano (Italy)
- President of the Anti-Doping area: Ivo Eusebio (Switzerland)
- Vice President of the Anti-Doping area: David W. Rivki (USA)

John Coates, Michael Lenard, Elisabeth Steiner, Antonio Arimany, Corinne Schmidhauser and Carole Malinvaud will be the new members of the CAS Executive. Among the new members of the Tribunal elected at the Lausanne Assembly is also the double Olympic medalist in triathlon Nicola Spirig (Switzerland). Ms. Spirig was elected as an independently-appointed member of ICAS to replace former member Judge Monique Jametti (Switzerland). She is a jurist and a former professional triathlete, with the 2012 Olympic champion, 2016 Olympic Silver medallist and seven-times European champion included in her tally of achievements.
